It all started on my fourth Christmas, when Santa brought me a “Muppet” drum set! From that point forward, a love of music and the equipment responsible for creating and reproducing it became a driving force in my life. Ever since a time when I was lulled to sleep by the sounds of my parents’ band rehearsals in our living room, spent countless car rides singing harmony with my family, or worked out new patterns on my drum kit, I felt a passion stirring and cultivating in my heart. I grew to intently listen to every note and every nuance of music presentation and in time was drawn specifically to the science of reproducing these wonderfully intertwined rhythms and melodies.
Besides drumsticks in my pocket, a pair of headphones wrapped over my ears was a daily necessity for me (still to this day). I used to make my own personalized mixtapes on cassettes meticulously timed and recorded from my favorite local radio stations, layering scratch tracks to accompany the “custom” recordings using my father’s worn-out turntable. Garage DJ parties and local band sessions were the norm in my parent’s garage. I was all in!
My love for audio equipment became increasingly stronger. Every piece I could collect was probed and dissected. I filled my bedroom with speakers, connecting them in all sorts of combinations of old and new components, seeking that perfect blend. To reproduce those beautiful sounds I loved so much in the most pure and authentic way was my constant quest.
My obsession with audio and related gear only grew stronger as I grew older. In high school I gobbled up all the electronics and music courses I could handle. I spent most of my free time installing car and home audio equipment for friends and family. After graduation, I found work at a handful of car and home audio installation businesses. My hobby was turning into a career!
In time, I decided to serve my country, and joined the US Navy. My love for anything electronic drew me to Military A-school where I was certified as an Aviation Electronics Technician and served aboard the aircraft supercarrier, USS Carl Vinson, CVN-70. The foundational knowledge of electronics, testing systems, and protocol gave me the background and confidence I needed to move ahead in related civilian industries. So after my tour of duty with the Navy, I dabbled a bit in testing and troubleshooting electronics for several companies but wasn’t satisfied. I could not escape my fascination with audio reproduction. Thus began my career in the home audio integration industry.
I spent the next twenty years designing, installing, repairing, and calibrating some of the world’s largest systems for the most discerning clientele. All the while, I enjoyed pro-bono work on custom car audio systems. These side-jobs helped me keep current with the technology and enhance my resume’.
As my work and family life grew, my wife and I eventually settled in the San Francisco Bay Area of CA. I found work with several pro-audio companies designing and installing audio, video and home security and automation solutions in all sorts of environments from small living rooms to executive mansions and large concert halls. I attended training in all sorts of related technologies such as controller programming, system integration, system tuning and others. Overall, this was a very productive time.
Maybe it was finances, maybe benefits, or maybe just for a change, but after a while I decided to switch careers. Opportunity at a local oil refinery prompted me to go back to school and certify as an Instrumentation Technician. The knowledge and experience gained in that role allowed me to excel in many business and technology related skills that will later prove invaluable.
Working at the refinery turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Besides meeting new people and learning new skills, a more predictable schedule and financial security offered me the opportunity to continue working with all sorts of audio, video and automated systems. One of the highlights was designing and building my own custom theater and distributed audio system in my home in Martinez, CA. In my spare time, I participated in the local music scene as a Live Sound Technician for a jazz/blues club, and as a lighting and sound Master Technician for a few large outdoor music festivals.
Over time, my opportunities to work in the audio industry began to compete with my time at the refinery. I was getting bored of the routine work and really missed working professionally in the audio industry. I missed collaborating with clients to create music even they couldn’t imagine. I missed the challenge of varying environments and diverse tastes. Nothing was more satisfying than seeing my clients’ smiles and feeling the excitement of completing a system and hearing it for the first time! I even missed their dogs! It was then that I finally realized that I would never be satisfied doing anything other than audio! It was time to venture out on my own. I had the knowledge, experience, passion, and even the jobs to finally give me the courage to leave the “corporate” world and make it on my own. This was the moment V13 Audio was born!
My love for the art of sound and my passion for sharing that with others really, truly fulfills my soul. I am extremely excited to finally share this all with you.
Happy listening!!
